Slots are entertainment, not income. The math is set up so the house wins over time. If you play, plan for that. If gambling stops being fun or starts costing you more than you can afford, help is available 24 hours a day, free and confidential.
This page covers how to keep slot play safe, warning signs that play has crossed into a problem, and direct contact information for support services worldwide.
Set limits before you play
Three numbers to decide before any deposit:
Session bankroll: how much you’ll spend in this session. Decide based on what you can afford to lose entirely. Treat it as the cost of entertainment, not an investment.
Stop-loss: a number below your session bankroll where you walk away even if you’re tempted to chase. For example, on a $100 bankroll, a $50 stop-loss means you stop playing if your balance drops to $50.
Stop-win: a number above your starting bankroll where you cash out, even if you’re winning. For example, on a $100 bankroll, a $300 stop-win means you cash out if your balance hits $300, regardless of how lucky you feel.
These three numbers turn variable slot outcomes into a controlled session. Without them, the brain’s reward system makes “just one more spin” easy to justify, especially after losses.
Warning signs of a problem
Recognize these patterns in yourself or someone close to you:
- Spending more time or money on gambling than planned
- Borrowing money to gamble or to pay back gambling debts
- Hiding gambling activity from family, friends, or partners
- Lying about how much you’ve gambled or won
- Gambling to escape stress, anxiety, or depression
- Feeling restless or irritable when not gambling
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop
- Chasing losses (continuing to play to win back what you’ve lost)
- Losing relationships, jobs, or opportunities because of gambling
- Considering or committing illegal acts to fund gambling
If three or more of these apply, gambling has likely moved beyond entertainment. Professional help is more effective than trying to manage alone.
Tools your casino offers
Most regulated casinos offer self-imposed controls. Use them before they’re necessary:
Deposit limits: cap how much you can deposit per day, week, or month. Once set, lower limits take effect immediately; raising them takes 24-72 hours (regulator requirement to prevent impulse changes).
Loss limits: cap how much you can lose in a defined period. Different from deposit limits because it accounts for partial winnings.
Session time limits: get a notification or forced logout after playing for a defined period.
Reality checks: periodic pop-ups showing time and money spent in the current session.
Cooling-off periods: temporarily block your account for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or 6 months. Lighter than self-exclusion.
Self-exclusion: block your account for 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or permanently. Once initiated, this cannot be reversed during the exclusion period (regulator requirement).
If your casino doesn’t offer these tools, that’s a sign to play somewhere else. Reputable licensed operators provide all of the above.

Helping someone else
If you’re concerned about a friend or family member’s gambling:
- Approach with concern, not judgment. People with gambling problems often feel ashamed and defensive.
- Don’t lend money or pay off gambling debts directly. This often enables continued play.
- Suggest professional help. Helplines support family members of problem gamblers, not just gamblers themselves.
- Set boundaries to protect yourself financially. Joint accounts, shared assets, and credit lines may need separation.
- Recognize that change comes from the gambler. You can support but not force recovery.
GamCare’s family helpline (UK) and similar services elsewhere offer dedicated support for affected family members.
Our position
We publish slot reviews and casino guides. We earn affiliate commission when readers sign up at 1Win Casino. We’re financially incentivized for you to deposit and play.
That doesn’t mean we want you to gamble money you can’t afford. It doesn’t mean we want anyone with a gambling problem to use our links. If our content reaches someone whose gambling is harmful, the right outcome is for them to seek help, not to deposit at any casino we mention.
If you’re reading this page because you’re concerned about your own or someone else’s play, please use the resources above. They’re better equipped to help than we are.
